University church of Christ

What Are The Expectations for Members of the University Church of Christ?

First, general agreement with the core doctrinal beliefs of the church. These are:

* That Jesus Christ is the son of God, that he became human and lived among us, taught us how we should live, and died so that we could be reconciled with God and each other.
* That the Bible faithfully contains the teaching of Christ, the prophets and the apostles, and is our primary authority for instruction in Christian living, as well as the best source of information about the life and character of Jesus.
* Our response to the good news about Jesus involves: believing in Jesus, turning away from our sins, confessing our unworthiness, accepting God’s grace, being baptized in the name of Jesus, and living joyfully in fellowship with other Christians.

What Are the Benefits of Membership?

It provides a spiritual family to support and encourage you in your walk with Christ (Gal. 6:1-2; Heb. 10:24-25.) It gives you a place to discover and use your gifts in ministry (1 Cor. 12:4-27). It places you under the spiritual protection of godly leaders (Heb 13:17; Acts 20:28-29.) It gives you the accountability you need to grow (Eph. 5:21).

About Baptism

Baptism is a "promise made to God from a good conscience" (I Pet 3:21 TEV). We urge all believers to be baptized (immersed in water). When the crowd at Pentecost asked Peter, “What must we do to be saved?” he answered by saying, “Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38 NLT). When we are baptized, we commit to making Jesus the Lord of our life. Those who have already been immersed before coming to UCC usually don't need to be baptized again. For those who have not, we'd consider it a privilege to be a part of this important step in your life. To learn more about the Bible’s teaching about baptism, we recommend reading “Baptism: The Demonstration of Devotion,”(pdf file) by Christian author Max Lucado, or speaking with one of our minister or elders.
